Cat Diary: Toastcat's Golden Breakfast Morning

Croissantcat was the first Bakery Cat. Straight after came Toastcat, a cartoon cat made out of a golden slice of toast, and the bakery has had a warm welcome waiting by the door ever since.

6am. Frost on the window and the ovens only just waking up. Toastcat found the first warm spot by the oven, as always, and had a long, slow stretch. A little crunchy round the edges first thing, but soft in the middle. Always.

7am. Breakfast time. Toastcat took up position right next to the toaster, ready to pop up the moment anyone said the word. Nobody said it for nearly four minutes. Toastcat waited patiently, because Toastcat is never in a hurry.

8.30am. The first customers came in from the cold, rubbing their hands. Each one got a cheerful hello from the counter, and a few of them said it was the warmest welcome they'd had all week. Toastcat simply glowed a slightly deeper shade of golden.

10am. Croissantcat strolled over for the morning catch-up, the way the two of them have done since the very first day. They agreed the bakery smelled right, the window looked right, and that nobody makes a morning quite like the two oldest cats in the place.

12pm. Cakecat burst in with news of a birthday and demanded a celebration. Toastcat didn't need persuading, and happily offered the toaster corner as the venue. It's the warmest seat in the house, after all.

3pm. The afternoon went quiet. Toastcat curled up by the oven, stripy tail tucked round, and dozed off to the sound of the bread cooling.

Toastcat's verdict on the day: a warm spot, a good friend and a proper breakfast. Nothing more is needed.
